How One Thing Leads to Another

So, I stumbled across this website called Alphabetimals. Wonderful idea for teaching very young children the alphabet. Kids can click to hear the sound an animal makes or click to hear the name of the animal spoken. They can also type in a word (like their name) to see it printed with the alphabetimals picture and/or preview their word on merchandise their parents can then purchase. Well….both the link to preview word on merchandise and print word did not work for me, so I was going to kindly send them an email and let them know. (Cause let’s face it, my name printed in alphabetimals would be pretty cool matted and framed) When I clicked on the link to send an email (low and behold), I realized, hey, I don't even use Outlook as an email client. I use web-based email. Ugh.

While web-based email is rather convenient for some things, it really didn't help me out with this little endeavor. So off I go. I haven't used an email client in some years (and never cared much for Outlook), so wasn't sure what would be the best option for me. Thus ensued around an hour or so researching email client software to download. Next thing I discovered is that my Yahoo web-based email does NOT allow you to receive your email through an email client! I swear I used to do this! Apparently not in a long time. I learned I have to have Yahoo Mail Plus in order to do this, which I really don't want to pay for. Let's face it, $19.99 per year isn't really ALL THAT MUCH money, but for not much more than that I can just have my OWN website with my OWN email. So, to make a long story short, I decided I'm going to slowly swap over to Gmail. (Who btw, allows you to import to a mail client). Still, I have to find said client in order to import to it. Finally, I decided on Windows Live Mail, which I downloaded for free in the Windows Live Essentials package, directly from Microsoft. It's a pretty neat mail client so far, if a little confusing at first. It took some rearranging, but I finally managed to get a layout that looked somewhat familiar to me. I set up a Gmail account and a Windows Live account linked to it with the Gmail addy. Apparently I set up a Gmail account and a Windows Live account years ago and forgot about it, because it kept automatically signing me in to the old one. (It's kinda scary how much stuff they remember about you, even though I have a different computer, a different house, a different ISP!).  Finally got it to agree that I could sign in using whatever account I wished. All is good now.

In the search for all of this, I somehow came across a blog by a lady who is living in Africa. She loves to go to thrift stores and buy clothes and make new things out of them and she crafts. My kinda blog. I thought...that might be a cool thing to do. I've been doing some crafting lately and it would be a cool way to share it. So off I go looking for a place to host my blog. When I typed blogging into my search bar, first place to come up was bloggger.com, so there I clicked. Low and behold, when I clicked on it, I was already signed in to a blog I created a few years ago, (and forgot about) to promote a powwow that I organize.(Really, really scary what they remember). Only I've gotten married since then and I wanted this to be a personal blog instead of an event blog. Took me forever to figure out that I had to create a new blog...couldn't seem to get rid of the old one. Did I mention that I'm new at this? Just because I majored in computer science and have taken EVERY computer science class CACC offers, does NOT mean I can easily figure out how to get rid of that blog! So, my dashboard still lists the older blog, but here I have a new one.

Once I decided to start a blog, I realized I might need something to organize my thoughts on my computer. I've never used One Note before, but since it came with my Microsoft Office, I figured I would give it a go. Awesome program, and there's an app for the iPad, so I can work from the computer or the iPad and it updates back and forth with ease. (Awesome!)

And that's how I decided to start blogging. All because I couldn't just click on the link and send an email to alphabetimals.com to let them know their link wasn't working.

I don't know exactly what all this blog will encompass and I'm not sure how often I will post, but I will be back.
